92% of Delhi NCR uses phones just before bedtime: The Wakefit Great Indian Sleep Scorecard 2024

Wakefit.co, one of India’s largest D2C sleep and home solutions providers, released the 7th edition of its Great Indian Sleep Scorecard (GISS) 2024. The survey from this year reveals intriguing details on the state of sleep trends and patterns in Delhi NCR. The report's findings revealed that 48% of Delhi NCR’s residents go to bed post 11 pm. The report also indicated that 95% of Gurugram and 88% of New Delhi’s residents have the habit of using their phones just before bedtime. Further findings from Delhi NCR have been elucidated below.
● Late nights, tired mornings
The report revealed that almost half of Delhi-NCR residents go to bed after 11pm, which is well past the ideal bedtime. Concurrently, 52% of New Delhi and 61% of Gurugram's population also reported not feeling refreshed upon waking up in the morning. Worrying about the future was also one of the reasons that contributed to 29% of New Delhi's late nights. This suggests that late bedtimes, coupled with stress and worry, are significantly impacting the sleep quality and morning alertness of individuals in these cities.
● Social media overdose
The consistent use of digital devices before bedtime causes sleep disturbances in both New Delhi and Gurugram. 88% of New Delhi and 95% of Gurugram reported habitually engaging with their phones just before bedtime. Furthermore, the grip of OTT and social media on bedtime habits is evident, with 57% of New Delhi and 63% of Gurugram reporting that their digital devices keep them up late at night. This indicates that the pervasive use of OTT and social media platforms at night acts as a major barrier to timely and restful sleep.
● Work, worry, and weariness
28% of New Delhi and 33% of Gurugram's workforce reported that their work requires them to stay up late at night. Interestingly, 59% of New Delhi and 56% of Gurugram complained that they feel sleepy during work hours. This suggests that the demands of late-night work and lack of sleep are directly contributing to daytime drowsiness, potentially affecting productivity and overall job performance in these cities.
● Stepping towards healthy sleep
To combat sleep disturbances, residents of 36% of New Delhi and 41% of Gurugram believe that avoiding digital devices before bedtime will help improve their sleep quality. . Additionally, 32% of New Delhi also believe that a better mattress will help them sleep better, while the same number of people in Gurugram believe that a consistent sleep routine will do so. These insights underscore the importance of adopting healthy sleep habits and creating conducive sleep environments to address the sleep challenges faced by residents of these cities.
The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard is an ongoing survey and the 2024 edition received 10,000+ responses, recorded from March 2023 to February 2024. It covers respondents in all Indian cities, across age groups, and various demographics.
