Non-Surgical Solution for Prostate Problems

– 75-Year-Old Man Successfully Treated with Advanced PAE Procedure at KIMS Saveera

A 75-year-old man from Hindupur, suffering from an enlarged prostate, has been successfully treated at KIMS Saveera Hospital, Anantapur, without the need for surgery. The patient, who was already dealing with hypertension and diabetes, had a severely weakened heart due to ischemic cardiomyopathy. Normally, the heart's pumping efficiency should range between 55-70%, but in his case, it had dropped to just 25%. His prostate, which is typically 20-25 cubic centimeters (cc), had grown to a massive 130 cc. Given his underlying health conditions, traditional surgical intervention was deemed too risky.

He was brought to KIMS Saveera Hospital, where a team of experts led by Dr. Moode Sandeep, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, opted for an advanced, minimally invasive procedure known as Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE) to treat his condition effectively.
“An enlarged prostate can cause difficulties in urination, frequent urges, and other discomforts. This condition affects approximately 50% of men aged 51-60, 70% of those between 70-79, and 80% of men over 80. Due to this patient’s age and multiple health concerns, surgery was not a viable option. We decided to proceed with Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE), a highly specialized and rare procedure beneficial for patients whose prostate size exceeds 100 cc, those who cannot tolerate anesthesia, or individuals with heart complications. This procedure involves injecting tiny particles into the arteries supplying blood to the prostate, reducing blood flow and gradually shrinking the prostate, alleviating symptoms,” explained Dr. Moode Sandeep.

The PAE procedure was performed as an outpatient treatment in the cath lab, making it a safe, effective, and minimally invasive alternative to conventional prostate surgery. The technique eliminates the risks associated with traditional surgery, such as excessive bleeding, post-operative pain, and prolonged recovery time.

Dr. G. Durgaprasad and Dr. Y. Madhumadhav Reddy, who were part of the treatment team, emphasized, “Unlike conventional surgery, PAE does not affect sexual function, requires only local anesthesia, and minimizes respiratory and other complications. Additionally, it significantly reduces hospital stay and enables patients to return to their routine activities faster. This makes PAE an excellent choice for individuals who cannot undergo major surgeries due to medical constraints.”
This successful case highlights KIMS Saveera Hospital’s commitment to offering cutting-edge medical treatments that enhance patient safety and improve quality of life. With advanced procedures like PAE, patients with high-risk conditions now have a safer, more effective option for managing prostate enlargement.
